Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) is no longer available for purchase from the Mac App Store.
And the i OS 11 update has some great additions like the new drag-and-drop feature that lets you drag content like photos from one app to another and the newly redesigned dock and task manager screen for easier multitasking.
Before doing that, in any case, check your most frequently used applications to see if they are compatible with the OS X version you intent to install.
If you have Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), and your computer meets the system requirements for OS X 10.11 (El Capitan), you can upgrade directly to that version instead; see How do I install or upgrade OS X 10.11 (El Capitan)?
To reinstall or recover Mountain Lion, you must have an active Internet connection.
The update weighs in between 250MB and 600MB, depending on your Mac, and can be downloaded through the Mac App Store.
Pull down the Apple menu and choosing Software Update, or launch the Mac App Store directly and look under the “Updates” tab.
